Fujimura's vision for the Xray Chair was to create a design that would erase the backside of the chair, resembling an x-ray image. By utilizing wood for the seat and legs, which require structural strength, and framing other parts, the chair achieves a lightweight construction. This innovative approach not only reduces the overall weight but also enhances the chair's visual appeal, giving it an ethereal quality.
The Xray Chair is crafted using Japanese oak wood, known for its durability and aesthetic appeal. The choice of material adds a touch of elegance to the design, making it suitable for various interior styles.
With its armchair and armless variations, the Xray Chair offers versatility in its usage. The armchair measures W540 L520 H720, while the armless chair measures W450 L590 H760. These dimensions ensure comfort without compromising on style.
During the design process, Fujimura was excited to see how the x-ray image reflected in the chair, bringing his vision to life. The chair's ability to adapt itself naturally to any interior space allows it to become a captivating focal point, creating a unique atmosphere.
The Xray Chair project commenced in April 2018 in Tokyo and was completed in February 2020. Throughout the development process, Fujimura encountered minimal challenges due to his clear vision for the design.
Fujimura's Xray Chair has garnered recognition in the design industry, receiving the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2020. This accolade is a testament to the chair's well-designed, practical, and innovative qualities, meeting professional and industrial requirements.
With its captivating blend of lightness, translucency, and adaptability, the Xray Chair by Masuo Fujimura is a testament to the power of design to transform interior spaces and create a sense of harmony and elegance.
